All the short stories are now collected in this volume, which includes three that have never been published in this country. Amsterdam is not really a hotbed of violent crime, but wrongdoing does occur. The more bizarre events are passed to the team of Grijpstra and de Gier. But as an American who reports his wife missing is told, "No use going all out to make arrests if you can't put the bad folks behind bars anyway," and in the Netherlands the police have so few cells available that they try to give everyone "the maximal benefit of all possible doubts."
